2009年7月11日午前7時40分頃、Sprain Parkwayを時速100キロで走っている最中にSakura Maya Stramが車の後部座席で産声をあげました。
車を路肩に停める余裕なんて全くなかったのです。
彼女は僕と妻のKaoriに一生忘れられない興奮の瞬間を与えてくれました。
つい２、３日前に起きた出来事にも関わらず、なんだかはっきり覚えていない気もしますが、これは本当にあったことなんです。
長男のNoahは、ママのお腹の中から外の世界へ出て行っても大丈夫かどうか、慎重に確かめてでもいるかのように、１３時間もかけて産まれてきました。
それで僕たち夫婦は、出産には時間がかかるものという印象を持っていたため、今回もまだまだ時間に余裕があると思っていたのでした。「病院に着くまで待って！」とKaoriが最後の最後まで願ったにも関わらず、陣痛が始まってから3時間でSakuraは産まれました。
そしてママがSakuraを強く抱きしめると、彼女は産声をあげたのです。
その瞬間、僕達の不安は一気に吹き飛び、Sakuraが僕たちを大変な出産から守ってくれたのだと気が付きました。
病院は、自分の産まれるべき場所ではないと彼女はわかっていたのかもしれませんね。
Sleepy Hollowという町のPhelps Memorial病院に着くと、僕たちは救急救命室でロックスターのように扱われました。
なんとそこで僕はSakuraのへその緒を切らせてもらったのです。
その後、分娩室はあの時、全て満室だったと知らされ、Sakuraが自分の初めての誕生日パーティーにいち早く到着しようとしたその決断を誇りに思いました。
前の晩に日本から来たおじいちゃんおばあちゃん達でさえもお祝いに参加できたのですからね。

On July 11th 2009, around 7:40 am, going a speedy 65mph on the Sprain Parkway, Sakura Maya Stram came out in the back seat of our car before I even had the chance to pull off the road. 
She gave Kaori and me an exciting moment that we will never forget, and at the same time seems like a blur even though it just happened a few days ago. 
Noah took about 13 hours to work his way out, cautiously checking to make sure it was safe to come out. 
This gave us the false impression that we had plenty of time. 
It was 3 hours since Kaori's first contractions when Sakura popped out, despite a last minute plea by Kaori to wait until we got to the hospital.
 And once Kaori held Sakura against her and Sakura let out a few cries, our anxiousness was gone and we realized that she had just saved us all a lot of hard work.
 She must have known that the hospital was not the right place to be born.
Once we did finally get to Phelps Memorial in Sleepy Hollow we were treated like rockstars in the ER. 
I had the honor to cut her cord and then we were told that all the birthing rooms were in fact occupied and so we were extra proud of Sakura's decision to arrive early to her own first birthday party.
 Even her grandparents from Japan, who had arrived the night before, could join in the celebration.
