今年の6月で息子のNoah（ノア）は2歳に、僕は専業主夫として2年目を迎えることになりました。
ノアは東京の恵比寿生まれで新宿区中野坂上育ち。
僕のふるさとのニューヨークには何度も里帰りしていますが、やはり、中野坂上が僕たちが「家」と呼べる場所です。僕とノアは2人で日々、アクティブに東京の暮らしを楽しんでいます。

日本（特に東京）は、見る事ややる事が山ほどある、とてもおもしろい町だと思います。
今は息子が僕のボスなので、なるべく彼がやりたいことを率先して行うようにしています。
幸いなことに、ノアは音楽好きでドラムで遊ぶことや、公園や運動場を走り回ることが大好き、というようにいろいろな事に興味を示します。
そして、僕たちは、いつも、新しい友だちを作ろうと努力しています。
新しい友達作りに最適な場所が近所の児童館です。
児童館のことを、僕たちは英語で”Play Center”と呼んでいます。
そこは、家にはない、いろいろなおもちゃやゲームがたくさんあるコミュニティーセンターで、日本語の絵本がたくさんある図書館や、ピアノやいろんな楽器がある音楽室もあります。
ノアが他の子どもたちと楽しく遊んでいる間、僕はママたち（男性はほとんど見かけないのです…）と話して日本語の練習ができます。
時には僕たちママのためのエクササイズクラスだってあって、最高です！
でも、子ども達が、近くを走り回っているので、気をつけてエクササイズしないといけません。おっと危ない！
雨の日や外がすごく暑い日には、狭い部屋から外に出かけるのに、児童館は最高の場所です。
行きつけの”Play Center” は今のところ4箇所あって、それぞれ違ったおもちゃがあるので、日によって行く場所を変えるのが僕たちの楽しみになっています。

ノアの東京でのお気に入りは電車。
よく線路や踏み切りのそばに座り込んでは、次々に行き交う電車の色を言っています。
ノアが電車好きなので、どこに行くにも電車を使えてとても便利です。
博物館、水族館、動物園にそれから東京のドルフィンイングリッシュにも。
あっ、ノアはもちろん英語を話しますが、ちょうど同じ年の男の子のクラスが出来たので、ノアの友だち作りと僕のママ友作りのために週一回ドルフィンイングリッシュのクラスに通っているというわけです。
僕たちは、本屋さんにもよく行きます。
でも、それはノアがお昼寝をしているときです。
彼は静かな本屋さんですやすやお昼寝タイム。僕はやっと、英語の本を読むことができます。
ノア用の絵本ではなくて文字だけの自分の本を…

僕は、今、与えられた専業主夫としての役割を結構楽しんでいます。
stay-at-home dadは、家にいて家事・育児をするパパという意味ですが、実際にはほとんど毎日出歩いてばかりいるので、ほとんど家にはいないstay-at-home dadです。
でも、毎日出かける前には一通りの家事もきちんとこなしています。
朝食は、ノアのママが仕事に出かける前に準備してくれます。そして、お弁当もよく作ってくれます。
ですから、僕の担当はベッドメイキング、お皿洗い、掃除と洗濯です。
ノアも僕を手伝ってくれて、やっとお出かけタイムです！

最近、ノアはとても体力がついてきて、たくさん歩いても平気です。
今の彼は、ほんとに健康なリトルボーイです。
でも1年前は、他の赤ちゃんと同じようによく風邪をひきました。
コミュニケーションがうまくいかない場所で
ひとりで病気の赤ちゃんの世話をしなければならないことがありました。
幸い、英語が話せるお医者さんを見つけることができましたが、それでもやはり、アメリカでお医者さんにみてもらったほうが、ずっと安心です。やっぱり、僕が育った文化圏ですからね。
このような経験を通して、僕の日本語は、ある程度、うまくなってきました。
でも、すべてのコミュニケーションが日本語でうまくいっているとはまだ言えません。特に、電話で話すのは一番難しいですね。

今年の夏、皆さんが僕のメッセージを読んでいるころには、
僕とノアはニューヨークでおばあちゃん、おじいちゃんと夏を楽しんでいる最中です。
僕の両親の家の周りには、東京のような児童館は無いし、電車も通っていません。
その代わりに、湖や砂浜があり、湖ではボート遊びができるのです。
慌しい東京で生活している僕たち家族にとって、つかの間しずかな休息となりそうです。

For the past year I have been taking care of my son Noah, who just turned 2 years old. Noah is my first child and he was born in Ebisu. Although we have visited my hometown in New York several times, Nakano-Sakaue (a busy area of Tokyo near Shinjuku station) is where we call our home. We have fun exploring Tokyo together and are very active.

Japan is a fun place for everyone. There are tons of things to see and do. Noah is the boss, so we try to do things he likes to do. Luckily he has many interests. Noah likes listening to music, playing drums, and running around at parks and playgrounds. We are always trying to make new friends. A great place to meet other children is at the neighborhood jidokan. I call them play centers in English. These are local community centers that have lots of toys and activities for children. Noah gets to play among other boys and girls and choose from many toys that he doesn’t have at home. There are libraries full of Japanese picture books and music rooms with pianos and other instruments. While Noah plays, I get to practice speaking Japanese with the moms. ( I don’t meet too many dads.) Sometimes there are even exercise classes for us “moms”. It is great! But you have to be careful since the children are running around everywhere. Ouch! When it is rainy and we want to get of our small apartment, or even when it is too hot to play outside, a jidokan is a great place to go. We have been to 4 different play centers already, since it is fun to see what different toys they have.

Noah’s favorite thing to do in Tokyo is to watch trains go by. He loves sitting near the train tracks or crossings and calling out the different colored trains that go by. Since Noah likes trains so much, it makes it easier when we have to travel somewhere by train.
We travel to the train museum, aquarium, zoo or English class at Dolphin English. We go to the bookstore, but that is when Noah is taking his afternoon nap, and finally I have a chance to read some books in English, without pictures…

I love my life as a stay-at-home dad in Tokyo.
I get to have fun with my son and as you can see we actually don’t stay at home that much. There are just too many different things to do in such an exciting and fast-paced city.
Recently, Noah has so much energy and loves to walk around a lot. He is a healthy little boy. A year ago however, like many babies his age, he would often catch a cold. I had the challenge of taking care of a sick baby in a place where I couldn’t communicate fully. Luckily I could find a doctor who speaks English, though I still feel more comfortable when I take Noah to a doctor in America, since that is the culture I grew up with.
Through my experiences, I have made some improvements in my Japanese conversation, but communication for certain matters is still a challenge and phone calls are the most difficult.

Next week Noah and I will be traveling to America again. We will be staying with Noah’s grandma and grandpa, my parents, for the summer. Near my family’s house there are no play centers or trains to watch. Instead, there is a lake and a sandy beach with lots of children to play with. There are boats to ride and dirt roads to run on. This will be a great vacation from our busy life in Tokyo.
