大の野球好きとして、僕は今年のWBCをとても楽しみにしていました。前回のWBCではかなり早い段階でアメリカが敗退してしまったので、今回はどのような結果を出してくれるのか、多くのアメリカ人の関心は高まっていました。アメリカは前回よりいい試合をしたと思いますが、やはり日本は強豪チームでしたね。

アメリカチームの大きな問題は、プロ野球チームが優秀な選手を国際試合に参加させないことです。WBCの時もそうでしたが、参加を望んでいた選手はたくさんいたのにも関わらず、彼らは参加しませんでした。それはチーム側が、選手に参加しないよう指示しているからなのです。日本や韓国は、オリンピックやWBCに優秀な選手を選抜して送り出しますが、アメリカのメジャーリーグのチームは、国際試合中に選手が怪我をしたり、シーズン開幕前に疲れてしまっては困ると心配しているのです。

今年のWBCの試合は観戦しようと思っていたのですが、アメリカで試合が行われていたため、時差の関係で、僕が寝ている間に試合が終わってしまうことが多く、ほとんどの試合結果はニュースで見ることになってしまいました。僕は日本人選手の名前は、あまり知りませんが、日本チームの試合だけ、何試合かテレビで見ることが出来ました。

アメリカ人は日本の野球にとても良い印象を持っています。そしてたくさんの人がダルビッシュ有選手のような実力のある選手に注目し始めています。いつかメジャーリーグで大きな戦力になると思っているからでしょう。しかしこのようにメジャーリーグが日本から優秀な選手を簡単に引き抜いていってしまうことについては、多くの議論があります。アメリカのチームは他のチームよりも多くの資金があるから、良い選手を簡単に引き抜くことができるというのは不公平だと僕も思います。自分の国の優秀な選手を手放して喜ぶ人はいませんよね。

トーナメント中、日本がどのような試合をするかを見ていましたが、僕は、決勝戦では韓国を応援してしました。僕は日本が大好きですし、日本人にはスポーツ好きな人が多くて嬉しいのですが、決勝では、日本が負ければいいのにとも思ってしまいました。それはなぜかと言うと、これから僕が日本人に「野球が好きなんだ。」と話す度に、日本人は必ず今回のWBCでの日本の活躍について話してきそうだからです。でもどうやら次回のWBCまで僕は我慢するしかなさそうですね。

 As a big fan of watching baseball, I was really looking forward to this year’s World Baseball Classic. Being from America, many people at home were very interested in knowing how the American team would do this time after losing very early in the last WBC. Most Americans I heard from thought the team would do better, but that Japan was still very strong. With the WBC over now, and Japan winning once again, I was happy to see the US do much better this time, though it would have been nice to see them win.

A big problem for any American team in world tournaments is that the professional teams don’t usually want to send their best players. This was especially true for the WBC as there were many players who wanted to join, but didn’t because their Major League team asked them not to. While teams in Japan and Korea are more than eager to show their best players in the Olympics and WBC, the American teams are often afraid that they will get hurt or that they will be too tired when the season starts. That is a big reason why the event was talked about a lot in the news in America, though it would have been much bigger had it included more of the best players from across the country.

While I tried to watch many of the games during this years WBC, I usually just read the news stories after the game because they were played in America while I was sleeping. I was able to watch a few of the Japanese games on television, though I only knew a few of the players’ names. Japanese baseball has a very good image in America and many people have started to watch the big players, like Yu Darvish, because they think that they might help their Major League team in the future. Because of this, there have been strong arguments for making it difficult for Major League teams to take players away from Japanese teams. I agree with these arguments because it is often unfair that some of the American teams have a lot more money to spend and no one wants the best players to leave a country’s professional league.

Though I was watching to see how Japan was doing during the tournament, I have to admit that I was cheering more for South Korea during the final game. I really like being in Japan and have a great appreciation for how much Japanese people love the sport, but I was hoping that Japan wouldn’t win because I am worried that until the next WBC, every time I tell someone in Japan that I like baseball, they will always want to talk about how well Japan did. But I guess there is nothing I can do about that until the next World Baseball Classic.
